[General] Voices of the Future

Wow. Well, usually at the 'Voices of the Future' thing, there's between 10 and 16 people there. Small groups, you can really get into some cool discussions with the authors who are there. I've always enjoyed those sessions.

This, however, was scary. Two University of Washington professors (one from the Human Interface Technologies department, to talk about Enhanced Reality, one from the engineering department, a nanotech guy there to talk about nanotech), and three authors (Greg Bear, Neal Stephenson, and Mark Ruff). The discussion was fascinating, and we got into the philosophy of science, and 'Darwin space' versus 'Turing space' in terms of how things are perceived, and all kinds of stuff.

But there were over a hundred people there. The auditorium was entirely filled. Normally, afterwards, you can wander around and socialize with the authors, get random things signed, etc. This time the crowd was so extreme that they could only let you have things signed that you had gotten there.

It was a lot of fun, and I got an idea for an SF story... but I much prefer the smaller, more intimate settings; this was so crowded and active that I was left feeling a bit drained and exhausted.

Anyway, for no readily apparent logical reason I shall close this post with a silly cheese meme that's making the rounds in Elizabeth's discussion group, which I shall now infect LJ with:

I am mozzarella!
Cheese Test: What type of cheese are you?

Comments

Apparently, I'm Brie. :P
I ate you for lunch today, then. You're delicious, but very fattening. ;P
You know,
that test is pretty cheezy
