[Science] Hobbit Skeleton discovered...

Getting away from the sociopolitical venting of my last post, scientists have discovered a new branch of the human family tree, a species classified as Homo floresiensis and given the common name "Hobbit" (in honor of Tolkein's stories) for being only a meter tall.

Other creatures on the Indonesian island where the Hobbit skeletons were found included a rat the size of a golden retriever, and a dwarf elephant the size of a pony which the Hobbits probably hunted. What's particularly interesting is that though the skeletons they've found date back 18,000 years, the local islanders have legends of encounters with 'Ebu Gogo' -- small people, a meter tall -- which are as recent as within the past few hundred years.

Interesting stuff!

Hobbitses! HOBBITSES!

Ahem. *cough*

In all seriousness, this is major cool, and definitely makes me wonder a bit more about the distant possibility that such people still exist. I mean, heck, almost every culture on the planet has stories about "little people"...

I dunno. It tickles my curiosity. :)
