DSL back = time to hit the iTunes music store!

Finally picked up the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, which I'd been meaning to do since we moved. I could've bought it at a store, but I think iTunes has utterly spoiled me. And it was totally worth the purchase... *sniffle* This soundtrack is one for all future epic fantasy films to be measured against. And all the vocals worked so well. I'm not normally a particular fan of Annie Lennox, but 'Into the West' is so haunting...

What can you see, on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call...?
Across the sea, a pale moon rises...
The ships have come, to carry you home.
And all will turn to silver glass,
The light on the water, grey ships pass
Into the west...

I have to agree.

The soundtrack is simply phenomenal, and it gives me chills, still, in some places.

The whole film gives me chills, really. It was something that's never been attempted before, a trilogy on such a grand scale. And it just /worked/. The cast, the scenery, the editing, the music... it was all wonderful. I'm still a little sad it's over!

I think it's both what many other epic films will be measured against, and I don't think we'll ever see its like again. Tolkein's work is such a fundamental part of the Western view of fantasy and myth by now that even for those who aren't familiar with the books still found the films spoke to them. There aren't many other epic stories that are as beloved or accessible to Western audiences, so it seems unlikely anyone will make another fantasy epic to equal this one.

Re: Lyrics

I keep forgetting to ask.. do you know of a website which has all the lyrics to the soundtracks? The only one I have is "May It Be".
I've got that soundtrack too. I did an offer from play.com and got the boxed trilogy for 12.99. I've had that song 'Into the west' on repeat for ages. It's hauntingly amazing!
