Ow. Dear lord...

arwen77, someone who I've known online for about a year now, has a story in his LJ which is rather unfortunate to read. I guess that's the price of vigilante justice...still, ow.

I'm no expert on Norwegian law, but it seems to me that he /should/ be given some form of dispensation...

Unless, of course, Children @ Risk don't want to stick up for him - at which point he's screwed. Which absolutely sucks.

His neighbor, however... that guy should be shot...
Ok, I just read this. I'm now crying. I know life isn't fair, but this is criminal.

God is an iron.
Don't get me wrong, I feel for the poor guy... and believe me, if this were going to go on in American court, I'd pay somebody to go hand out FIJA leaflets to everyone who went within 100 yards of the courthouse, and get this dude off...

But snoopy-ass people, both with and without badges, and virii that can destroy your machine and, in this case at least, your whole life, are why I don't run proprietary OS's. Hell, yeah, it's elitist. I am better than the goons that want to snoop around on my computer.
You mean its why you don't download child pornography, right? Right?

I can't believe someone managed to turn this into something on the virtues of operating systems. :)
I'm sorry, you can post all the "oh, poor me" stories about the police state(s) you want, but it's just INFORMATION. The real question here is what are we going to DO about it?

My answer is to do something that costs no more than time that will keep the bastards out of my personal life long enough for me to figure out what else I'm going to do.

Shut the damn barn door. THEN load your rifle.

Yes, it's horrible what they're doing to them. He's in fscking NORWAY for pity's sake. There's damned little effective I can do about it here, half a world away. Norwegians don't respond nearly as well to demonstrations in front of their embassies as Americans do, at least that I know of.

We all have our dirty little secrets. Yes, even you. And as we can see, there are people out there who are prepared to twist anything we do into some form of evil. Kiddie porn is evil, sure. I don't go there, not even to root it out. The current war on our rights is a greater evil, and still greater than that is the evil of sloth that two-hundred-odd million people are participating in in this country alone, refusing to take basic steps to personally protect their rights (and I'm not talking just computer privacy here, although that's one field I'm passionate about).

If I can get people to realize that not only could this very easily happen to YOU, but you can prevent it, I will have done what I set out to do. Frankly, I don't much care who I piss off in so doing. These basic steps are that important.

Lech Walesa said that the free flow of information was vital to fighting totalitarianism. Our computers are vital to that flow in today's world. But then, you're smart, you knew that last. As long as those of us who fight for freedom have this big honkin' Achilles Heel just begging for some idiot to put an arrow into, we're fscked, just like our hero.

It's not advocacy. It's basic survival technique.

Sigh.

That bites a lot. Isn't there anyway that he can be helped or something?
